Bill began his journey to art when at the age of 24 he became a certified aircraft welder.
He then became a licensed contractor, doing nuclear and pipeline welding and also
taught welding, he spent several years in the welding and metal fabricating business
before become a metal artisan, many of his current projects are art that is functional,
he is adding another dimension and is in the process of creating a wall sculpture, he
also does bronze and copper sculptures and is incorporating glass with his hand forged
metal projects. Formal Art Education includes, art studies at Southwestern College,
Mesa College and University California San Diego. Classes with Gill Reynolds.
All pieces created by Brents Metal Art are hot forged and hand built, with care given
to every detail and design, most of the designs are one of a kind. The process of hot
forging is used throughout the creation of my art to taper and reduce the thickness and
width of the solid steel and to add texture and give the art a third dimension. Part of this
process is the use of a power hammer and hand hammered steel on an anvil to create
the pieces.
The copper and bronze items are designed and constructed entirely by myself, the
bronze items are sculpted in wax or clay before they are cast at a foundry, after return
from the foundry there is additional hand finishing of the bronze items before they are
incorporated into the piece. The glass items in my pieces are also hand made by me
and are a combination of fusing of glass and a process known as lamp working that is
the melding of glass using a torch.
